Does God Really Care About Everything That Concerns Us?

Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. —Psalm 37:4

Another ordinary workday—or so I thought. Reaching into my closet, I selected a casual outfit suitable for work. As I laid it across the bed, the Holy Spirit got my attention with these words (God’s voice was a strong thought in my mind): Don’t wear that!

I stood there puzzled as to why I shouldn’t wear this outfit to work as I had many times before. After a few moments, I said out loud, “Okay, Lord. I won’t wear this. I am going back to my closet, and I ask you to show me what I should wear.”

As I looked at the clothes hanging in my closet, the Holy Spirit strongly impressed me to wear a particular outfit that I usually wore to church, not work. It was much dressier. This meant dressier shoes as well. I had no idea why the Lord would direct me to wear something different, but I knew He had spoken to me, so I obeyed.

Quickly getting my toddler secured in the car, I was on my way, all dressed up as if going to church. I dropped my daughter off at daycare and arrived at work, feeling a little conspicuous so dressed up in a casual work atmosphere.

The morning was no different than any other workday until one of my co-workers stopped by on his day off. That was unusual, but I didn’t think much of it at the time.  He had been there about ten minutes when I suddenly remembered a luncheon that I wanted to attend, but knew I couldn’t because it was on a workday.

“Richard, do you have anything particular planned for today?”

“No, why?” he answered.

I told him about the luncheon and asked if he could stay and work for me so that I could go. He agreed, saying it was no problem at all. Thanking Richard, I left quickly, having exactly the time I needed to drive to the luncheon at a church in a neighboring town ten miles away.

As I stepped into the church’s fellowship hall, I knew immediately why the Lord had directed me to wear a different outfit. The tables were beautifully decorated with white tablecloths, flowers, fine china, silverware, and stemware glasses. This was a dress-up affair. My heart was flooded with thankfulness that God cared so much for me personally. He had not only made a way for me when I saw no way to attend the luncheon, but He also didn’t want me to feel out of place when I saw how everyone was dressed.

I was a fairly new Christian at that time, delighting in the goodness of God every day. And this day was such an unexpected blessing to me being with other Christians, enjoying a delicious meal, and hearing the guest speaker’s inspiring message. God had given me one of the desires of my heart that day! And it was even more special to me that He cared about everything that concerned me. He didn’t want me to feel uncomfortable in an outfit not fitting for the occasion, so He directed me to wear an appropriate outfit for the luncheon. He had also guided the steps of my co-worker that day, orchestrating every detail to fulfill my heart’s desire.

Thank you, Lord, that you care about everything that concerns me.
